FUNNY 80s Memes

Hilarious 1980s memes

When someone at the office likes the same 80s bands that you do:

Remember long distance phone rates were outrageously high, then there was this new '10 cents' a minute thing *after 10 pm, certain states, certain dates, non-competing phone lines only...

80s phone calls were not 10 cents a minute

BORN IN THE USA - Bruce Springsteen Memes

BORN IN THE U.S.A.

Up there as one of the greatest albums of all time, it was released on June 4th, 1984. You know what I think would have been even cooler? If it was released a month later on July 4th, USA day. Born in the USA was release on the date the USA was ‘born’ itself. That would have been symbolic.

Born in the U.S.A. Bruce Springsteen album cover

The album was recorded over a two year stretch. Bruce had plenty of song ideas - some say The Boss wrote 70 or 80 songs during that time. But, when it came down to the last day of recording, the producer said to Bruce. “We need one more song.” Obviously Bruce was a bit pissed, but he went home that night and came back with a gem of a song. One of my favourites, DANCING IN THE DARK.

A last minute addition turns out the be a number one hit!

The E street band

I think it helped that he added a little of the 80s sound to it. You know, a little electronic synthesizer sound. Made it a little easier to dance to than his previous music that had a folkier sound to it.

Bruce Springsteen adds more keytar

We all know the famous 80s dance from the video of DANCING IN THE DARK. That cheesy arm swaying by Courtney Cox is iconic. Apparently that was the inspiration for the Carlton dance from Fresh Prince of Belair…in other words, dorky dancing!

The Carlton dance

The cover was also very, of the times. Tight ass, worn in jeans, his white shirt…obviously the red and white stripes in the background all add upto the American flag. Born in the USA. You can make the easy connection there.

Apparently Bruce picked this picture b/c he thought his backside looked better than his face. Ouch.

The songs on this album took this US theme and ran with it. Songs about the state of the States, Unions, unemployment, tough times for the poor seemed a little radical for the times, but seemed to be a turning point for this kind of rock. Helping similar artists like Tom Petty or John “Cougar” Mellencamp, who had similar kinds of lyrics.

Born in USA album was made in China!

I wouldn’t take any of his song titles literally, I’M ON FIRE was not about him being lit up and burning. It was about love, a love song.

Bruce Springsteen - I'm on fire

DANCING IN THE DARK was also not about turning the lights off and dancing around, that sounds dangerous. It was about ‘coupling’ I believe.

Dancing in the dark is dangerous

MY HOMETOWN, was not about Bruce’s hometown. It was about a generic small town that anyone could have grown up in. Bruce was actually born on a tree called Long Branch, in New Jersey somewhere. I’m guessing an oak tree b/c they can have big branches.

GLORY DAYS, well that was about the glory days, but not Bruce’s real glory days. It was about a made up guy, unnamed. Possibly Spruce Bringsteen.

I think the only song title that was actually true was BORN IN THE USA. As I said earlier Bruce was born in New Jersy on a long branch in an oak tree.

Then thinking I was a cannibal for wanting to eat that man! Then listening to Hall and Oates sing Maneater and feeling much better about my appetite.

It was a real battle of emotions with all these 80s celebrities. I needed to put on my armour before entering the battlefield of love. And taking after Pat Benatar I donned the same armour she wore. A spandex suit.

Love is a battlefield - wear appropriate amour

Was I drugged or poisoned? I think it was poison I'd ask for extras!

HALL AND OATES - BEST OF THE 80s

HALL AND OATES

HALL AND OATES PICTURES

The best selling duo of of all time were superstars of the 80s music scene!

D Hall & J Oates

Daryl Hall and John Oates. Hall and Oates. You can tell where they got the band name from, but apparently they both didn't like being called by their last names. Felt like they were back in high school gym class, or some drill sergeant was reaming them out..."Hall, get down and give me twenty!" But, the duo name stuck and there was no going back.

Hall and Oates

These two really hit it off after they first met at University in the late 60s. They were both playing in different bands, but realized they liked the same kind of music...and sixty years later they are still playing together.

Hall and Oates Party Animals!

I happen to run across their PBS special back in 2019. Boy, do they look old now. But, they still play amazing. One of those long haul duos that will never split...I hope.

There are sometimes questions about their relationship. Are they 'together'. Some of the old pics of Hall seem like he could be into men, but it turns out they are more like brothers.

Hall and Oates like brothers

Hall and Oates buddies for life

As time passes and seasons change so does my favourite Hall and Oates song. When I was younger it was Maneater! That funky, motowny, bass line really turned my crank.

John Oates

Then You Make My Dreams Come True was my number one hit for awhile. Probably about the time that movie Three Men And A Baby came out.

There is only one ORIGINAL HALL AND OATES

Private eyes, I can't go for that, Out of Touch, Kiss on my list, Say it isn't so, Method of modern love, are always on my play list.

No Hall and Oates on the playlist, say it isn't so!

There is one song I almost forgot about, until I heard it on the radio the other day. Rich Girl! Remember that one? It's a little older, and has that kind of disco era feel to it, but I still love it.

Hall and Oates were never Out of Touch!

Anyway, enough from this Hall and Oates fan.

80s SONG MEMES

 FUNNY 80s MEMES

Let's start with a mash up - Flock of Seagulls mixed with Mr. Mister! How 80s is that?

Flock of Seagulls and Mister Mister!

After Mr. Mister we will stick with the 80s soft rock and have a go at Chicago! Remember them? They had a hard time saying sorry.

Chicago meme

The weather in Chicago can be really extreme, so it's important to dress for the weather. Just like these guys who dressed for the mid 80s!

Dress for the 80s joke
Now, if you like it hot you'll be a big fan of this next meme featuring the blood pumping Motley Crue.

They really knew how to dress for the mid 80s. And the hair! 80s priceless!

Speaking of heat, Australia is hot. The land down under! Remember that song by Men in Hats?
Where is the hat? Men in Hats!
But, at least when it rained it wasn't purple. Only royalty like a PRINCE could get purple rain!
Prince Purple Rain
That was a good one, it even made Eddie Van Halen split a gut!

Eddie Van Halen You Really Got Me

Now before I go I'll wake you up. According to 80s music lyrics it is rude not to wake someone up before you go-go.

George Michaels is sad because nobody woke him up before they go go'd

FUNNY 80s MUSIC MEMES

80s MUSIC JOKES

Remember Cheap Trick? Big in the early 80s, had a couple of big hits like Surrender and The Flame. I always picture the black and white checkered outfit and guitar when I think of that band. 80s fashion was weird.

Cheap Trick just seems a little weird
Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird...
The Flame burns Cheap Trick
Cheap Trick's Flame was hot, not to be confused with Cyndi's Eternal Flame with was not.

Thinking of the early 80s, remember REO SPEEDWAGON? What a name. And, looking back, what a hairdo! I think the videographer of the video for I can't fight this feeling tried 'mood' lighting to hide the hair.

I can't fight this feeling

The Clash was big around that time too. Remember they called London, or something like that. Funny, they seemed really wild and punky at the time, but their music was not really all that hard. Not like the heavy metal to come later in the decade, or the punk scene in the nineties.

The Clash rocking the casbah

WHAM! I think that was early slang that meant I'd HIT that.
WHAM I'd hit dat
You'd want to make sure you are alone when you do that. Just like Tiffany said half a decade later.
Tiffany Home Alone meme

Speaking of Love and stuff of that nature, how about that song by Def Lep - LOVE BITES! What was that supposed to mean? I took it literally.
Def Lep song Love Bites is inappropriate when taken literally

Tom Petty had a bunch of love inspired songs. I'm assuming Don't Do Me Like That is in reference to a nasty break up at the gates of hell...or am I meshing two songs together. I do that with Tom's songs.
Tom Petty asks us to not do him like that

Tom Petty tells us that we don't know how if feels
For awhile I misheard the lyrics and thought Tom was talking about meat. Like a pro-vegetarian song.
Misheard 80s lyrics - Tom Petty

Lyrics sometimes confused me, because I took them too literal. Like Phil Collins. Why would he want it to rain on him? And how could Billy possibly lose his phone number. And even if Billy did, there was a thing called a phone book!
Why Did Phil Collins want it to rain down on him?

Phil if Billy loses your number check the phonebook

And Culture Club. The only club I really understood was civic clubs like the LIONS or Oddfellows, or something like a bookclub.
Culture Club like a bookclub?

And often in clubs you had to wear a specific outfit, like a boy scout outfit or possibly a red hat. Maybe a raspberry beret. Be part of the Prince, TAFKAP fan club?
